Sending emulsion paint need not be difficult or expensive, we have been sending paints and emulsions for the last three decades.
Emulsion paints are extremely popular and are typically used for interior walls and ceilings, are water based and contain vinyl or acrylic resins added for durability. They come in Matt, Silk and Satin finishes, with the silk and satin varieties providing more durability.
A cardboard box must be used for the outer packaging due to COVID-19 handling restrictions.
Brushes and rollers are simple to clean, washed in water, without the need for brush cleaner or turpentine solutions. They are also far less odorous than oil-based paints.
Pretty much every homeowner has used emulsion paint at some point. Other popular water-based paints include clay and chalk paints. These are more eco-friendly, as they do not contain oils or acrylics. They come in a wide range of colours and earthy tones and also have a matt finish. These are very popular for furniture and do not require an undercoat or primer.
So why is it so difficult to find a courier for emulsion paint? Most couriers tend to stay away from shipping emulsion paint, due to past experiences of lids coming off and paint going everywhere. Far easier to avoid them all together. However, with a little thought and care when packing emulsion paints, you can significantly reduce the risk of any damage during transit.
We have put together a definitive guide on how to pack emulsion paints, which can be found below. Please note that Overland Express, or our carriers, will not accept any responsibility for paints damaged in transit.
Working in partnership with DHL, we can send emulsion paints worldwide, along with any other water-based paints, fully tracked and signed for, door to door.
Oil-based paints, varnishes, spray paints, radiator paints, sealers and lacquers cannot be sent with DHL, as they are flammable and need to be sent on the UPS Specialist road service.
The easiest way to determine if you have water-based paint, is to read the cleaning instructions on the outside of the tin. If it says that you can clean your brushes out in water, it is water based.
If it says that you require thinners or turpentine solution, it is oil based. Traditionally, all gloss paints, fence paints, undercoats, varnishes and sealers were oil based, todays modern varieties are often water based.
If you are in any doubt, ask the supplier of the paint, or check the material safety data sheet (MSDS). The MSDS also contains shipping information and will indicate any restrictions applicable to that particular product.
If the packaging contains any flammable, or hazardous labels, it cannot be sent with DHL and must go on our specialist service.

How to Send Emulsion by Courier
Prerequisites:
Bubble wrap
Parcel tape
Strong cardboard box
Polythene bag
Lid clips
A cardboard box must be used for the outer packaging due to COVID-19 handling restrictions.
When sending emulsion paint, make sure that the lid on the metal, or plastic, paint container containing the paint is securely sealed, using paint tin clips. Then securely fasten the lid in place, in both directions, ideally using a band-it, banding tool. If you do not have access to one of these, you can use reinforced parcel tape or duct tape, again, applied in two directions, to securely hold the lid in place.
Once you have completed this, please wrap the entire paint container with bubble wrap and secure in place with parcel tape. Please then place the paint tin inside a secure polythene bag, this it to contain any paint in the bag, in the event that the paint leaked from the tin. You can then securely tie the bag with a cable tie.
Once this is completed, place the tin inside a double walled cardboard box and fill the cardboard box with packing materials or foam peanuts. Make sure there are enough peanuts in the box to keep the paint container from moving around during transit. Once packed, shake the box to make sure that is held securely in place. If you can hear the tin moving about, please add further packing material. When you are happy that the paint cannot move about, seal the box securely with 2 to 3 layers of strong parcel tape. Where possible, we recommend double boxing paints, where the first box is placed within a larger box, with a wall of packing material between the inner and outer box.
If you are sending 2.5 ltr paint tins, or larger, these must be packed in separate boxes. No more than one tin per box. Do not send the larger 10 ltr plastic containers, they are too heavy for this service and are easily damaged in transit.
Once this is complete, print off and attach your parcel label to the box.
